Yellowknife, NT – 15 people from BC, the Yukon and NWT are attending the first of its kind, “Embrace Your Story” a Northern Guardians Leadership Retreat this week at the Ski Club in Yellowknife.

This is a workshop for northern Guardians to work on developing their leadership skills by focusing on the role of story. The story of Indigenous peoples sacred responsibility and connection to the land, water and animals.

The Northern Indigenous Stewardship Circle (NISC), a project of MakeWay Charitable Society, based in Yellowknife has launched this pilot program to meet a call to action from northern Guardians to provide more professional development opportunities.

“We designed this workshop to improve and feel more comfortable with storytelling.” Amos Scott, NISC project director, “Storytelling is a powerful tool in indigenous led stewardship, and Guardians are on the front line in that work.”

This first of its kind workshop has 8 participants from the Yukon, Northern British Columbia and the Northwest Territories and 7 on the support team. The group will be working together from July 6-10, 2026.

“I really wanted to expand my experience and knowledge into leadership to get them a bigger role, especially working with community members and youth as well as elders.” Kyanna Lennie-Dolphus, workshop participant from Tulita. “I feel like I'm trying to find a fine line between traditional knowledge, as well as Western science and knowledge of that, and try to better communicate with people within my community.”

This workshop is supported by MakeWay Foundation, Nature United and Wilburforce Foundation.
